The Christmas tree is probably the most recognizable symbol of Christmas. Many Christians feel that we should not have a Christmas tree in our home because of its pagan roots. However, a study of its origin goes all the way back to Yggdrasil the world tree, that is traced back to the tree of life. The triangular shape was meant to represent the triune God. The Christmas tree itself is traced back to a specific oak tree that was dedicated to a Scandinavian deity named Donar. Germanic groups traced the Christmas tree back to other trees that they worshipped. Many customs that people embraced survived their conversion to Christianity and the Christmas tree became a symbol to keep the devil out of their homes. Those who do not support a Christmas tree point to Jeremiah 10:1-16. However, the scripture speaks to the formation and adornment of wooden idols and graven images, that God’s people are not to worship.
